Retaining Walls

Structural retaining walls designed and built for residential, rural, and commercial properties across Central Victoria. Engineered for longevity and matched to the demands of the site.

A well-built retaining wall does more than hold back earth — it creates usable space, protects structures, controls drainage, and adds lasting value to a property. Australian Trenching and Excavations designs and constructs retaining walls for a wide range of applications: from modest garden terracing on residential lots to large-scale structural walls supporting cut-and-fill platforms on rural and commercial sites. With over 35 years of earthmoving experience across Central Victoria, we understand how the ground behaves and build retaining structures that perform for decades.

Residential Retaining Walls

Sloped residential blocks often need retaining walls to create level lawn areas, garden beds, driveways, or building platforms. We construct timber, concrete block, and rock-faced retaining walls suited to residential scale — matched to the aesthetic of the property and engineered to handle the soil pressures behind them. Correct drainage behind the wall is critical and always included in our work, not treated as an afterthought.

Rural & Agricultural Retaining

On rural properties, retaining walls are often required to stabilise cut banks on access roads, protect creek crossings from erosion, or support shed and machinery shed sites that have been cut into a slope. We use heavy rock and concrete where the load demands it, and our earthmoving equipment allows us to handle large-scale retaining projects that smaller operators can't take on.

Cut & Fill Platform Walls

New builds on sloping land frequently require a cut-and-fill operation to create a level building platform — and the retained cut face needs a properly engineered wall to remain stable over time. We co-ordinate the site cut and the retaining wall construction as a single integrated scope, ensuring that the wall is designed for the actual retained height and soil type rather than specified generically.

Drainage Behind Retaining Walls

Hydrostatic pressure from water building up behind a retaining wall is one of the leading causes of wall failure. We install AG pipe drainage systems, gravel backfill, and weep holes as standard practice on all our retaining wall projects — ensuring water can escape rather than build pressure against the structure. This is non-negotiable on any properly built retaining wall and is always part of our scope.
